This multi-modal presentation is a video compilation of some of the art that myself and other family members have created from recycled and repurposed materials. It documents the processes involved in creating these artworks through a photo compilation. The video was created and edited on the free photo and video software provided on Windows 10. Some of the special effects were created on Snapchat and then morphed into the slideshow. The children’s song ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ by Jack Johnson was added as a backing track, as I believe it perfectly aligns with the message of this artwork.
The purpose of this multi-modal presentation is to inspire people to ‘think big’ about issues of environmental concern and importance through firstly ‘thinking small’ and assessing whether things can be recycled, repurposed, or reused before they chuck them out. Through the process of considering more carefully how we dispose of things, and thinking about how we can reduce the amount of waste that we create, I hope to encourage people to think more broadly about their environmental impact and how we can contribute to creating a more sustainable future.
This piece is intended as inspiration for others and as a demonstration of how what we commonly consider as ‘trash’ can often be recycled, reused, or repurposed to produce pieces of art and/or furniture. I hope that this artwork embodies the saying that ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’, and encourages viewers to ask themselves: ‘can this item be recycled, reused, or repurposed?’ before it is discarded as trash. This project does not claim to provide an easy solution to huge and complex issues surrounding sustainability, however, it does intend to serve as a starting point from which people can begin to consider their own environmental footprints and the perils associated with pollution, overconsumption, and waste.
